New CEA standards land in April 2027. Check your BOM
The CEA notified amended technical standards in July 2026, effective April 2027: 25 year design life, bypass diodes and salt mist testing near the coast.

Most compliance news this year has come with a deadline inside a quarter. This one does not, which is exactly why it is worth reading now rather than in eighteen months.
The Central Electricity Authority notified its amended Technical Standards for Construction of Electrical Plants and Electric Lines on 3 July 2026. They take effect on 1 April 2027, and they extend the standards to cover solar, floating solar, onshore and offshore wind, and battery storage.
What the regulations actually say about solar
Three requirements matter for anyone building PV.
- A minimum design life of 25 years for solar power plants.
- Bypass diodes, so that output is maintained when a cell fails.
- Salt mist corrosion testing for modules installed in highly corrosive environments.
Trade coverage of the notification has also reported requirements for RFID tagging of modules for traceability, alongside the wider standards for storage and wind.
For floating solar the standards go further, adding salt water and ultraviolet resistant materials and mandatory wind tunnel and buoyancy testing.
How much of this is already how you work
Honestly, a fair amount of it.
Bypass diodes are standard in every credible module. Reputable manufacturers already publish 25 year performance warranties, and IEC qualified modules are already tested to defined standards. If you buy well, the module side of this changes little.
Where it bites is the rest of the plant, and the paperwork.
Design life is a system property, not a module property. A 25 year design life for the plant implies structures, fasteners, cables, connectors, conduit, earthing and combiner boxes that survive 25 years in that location. The market's habit of quoting a 25 year module warranty on a structure that will rust in eight is exactly what a design life standard eventually catches.
Salt mist testing is a procurement question near the coast. If you build in Chennai, Kochi, Visakhapatnam, coastal Gujarat or Mumbai, start asking suppliers for the test report now rather than in March 2027. The manufacturers who have it will produce it. The ones who do not will say the word "marine grade" and change the subject.
Does it apply to a 3 kW rooftop system?
This is the honest gap in what we can tell you.
The coverage available describes the standards as applying to solar power plants, and does not spell out a threshold below which a small rooftop system is exempt. So we will not claim there is one, and we will not claim there is not.
What is safe to say: the direction is toward specified, testable, documented equipment across all plant sizes, and nothing in the requirements above is unreasonable for a rooftop job built properly. Treat them as where the floor is heading, and verify the applicability to small systems with your DISCOM before you tell a customer anything definite.
What to do in the next six months
Four things, none urgent, all cheaper now than later.
- Ask your module suppliers for the salt mist report for any product you use within thirty kilometres of the coast. Keep it on file with the datasheet.
- Review your structure specification against the design life you are claiming in proposals. Galvanising thickness, fastener grade and the mounting method decide whether 25 years is a claim or a fact.
- Check your cable and connector selection for UV exposure and temperature rating. This is the single most common gap between a system that lasts and one that does not, and it never shows up in the first two years.
- Keep your commissioning documentation together. Serial numbers, datasheets, test reports and photographs. A traceability requirement is easy for a company that already files these and painful for one that does not.
Why this is good for a competent EPC
Standards raise the floor, and the floor is where you are losing bids.
Every EPC who prices properly has lost a job to a competitor whose number worked only because the structure was thinner, the cable was cheaper and the earthing was notional. A standard that requires documented design life, tested components and traceability makes that comparison harder to hide, provided you can show your own compliance easily.
That is the part worth preparing: not the requirements themselves, but the ability to produce evidence of meeting them without a two day search through WhatsApp.
